Watoto Uhuru Company
Youth African Dance & Drum Performance Ensemble

The Watoto Uhuru performance ensemble is comprised of boys and girls, dancers and drummers, who are committed to the study of African dance and drum.  Company members regularly learn choreography, history, techniques and have the opportunity to showcase their skills in various performances.

Students interested in joining the performance ensemble must first attend dance class as a student or be able to  demonstrate previously acquired skills.  Students then commit to a minimum of 2 seasons  as an apprentice to learn choreography and performance skills.

The Uhuru Dancers and the Uhuru Family (Mzee, Watoto, Community Drummers) have been closely monitoring news and recommendations from the CDC and the World Health Organization regarding COVID-19. Although we hoped to continue our weekly classes of dancing and drumming, the health and wellness of our community is our first priority.

The Friday night dance and drum classes for Mzee Uhuru, Watoto Uhuru, and the community drummers have been canceled until further notice.

Sis. Toni Young offers a class for youth from Kindergarten through 12th grade. The classes provide the foundations of traditional African dance, music, and song.  Children learn basic movements associated with African dances.  As students advance and commit to an apprenticeship they learn choreography and have various opportunities to showcase their talents. Many Watoto, have grown up under the direction of Sis. Toni, and become Uhuru Dancers, dance instructors, artistic directors, and performers.
